See what your completed voyages could have achieved
Executed Voyage Optimization recreates a completed voyage using the weather forecasts that were available at the time. We re-optimize the route and speed every 24 hours, without hindsight, and compare the optimized voyage with the vessel’s actual performance.
No installation. No changes on board. Simply share the voyage data you already have.
Simulated result from an actual completed voyage; details anonymized, figures rounded.

No hindsight bias
Each optimization uses only the forecast available at that point in the voyage.

A realistic re-optimization of an executed voyage
Executed Voyage Optimization is a retrospective voyage analysis designed to show what could reasonably have been achieved through daily route and speed optimization.
Rather than calculating one theoretically perfect route after the voyage, Optimum Voyage reconstructs the decision-making process as it would have happened in real time.
At each 24-hour interval, the voyage is re-optimized using only the weather forecast that was available on that date. The result is then compared with the vessel’s actual route, speed, fuel consumption, arrival and commercial outcome.
This provides a transparent assessment of the additional potential that may have existed during the voyage.
It is not a perfect-hindsight calculation. It is a reconstruction of the decisions that could realistically have been made at the time.

Share the executed voyage data
You send the voyage information already collected during the voyage, including noon reports, vessel particulars, voyage instructions and commercial parameters.
We recreate the voyage
We reconstruct the vessel’s actual voyage using reported data, AIS positions and the voyage timeline.
We re-optimize every 24 hours
The route and speed are re-optimized throughout the voyage using the archived forecast available at each decision point.
Receive a clear comparison
The actual and optimized voyages are compared across route, speed, duration, fuel consumption, cost and weather exposure.
One voyage. Two different outcomes.
The example below is based on an actual completed voyage: a laden bulk carrier from Japan to the US West Coast, approximately 4,000 to 5,000 nautical miles, evaluated using actual voyage data and archived weather forecasts. The vessel and customer details have been anonymized, and the commercial figures are rounded for public presentation.
What happened in the analysis
The actual vessel sailed the route shown in the first line. EVO reconstructed the voyage and produced a new route and speed plan at 24-hour intervals using only the forecasts available during the voyage. The optimized result was then evaluated using the same vessel condition, fuel prices, cost of time, destination and operational constraints.
In this minimum-cost scenario, EVO identified a materially different combination of route and speed. The simulated voyage used less fuel but had a longer duration. When the fuel cost and cost of time were combined, the EVO scenario produced a lower total voyage cost.
Simulated EVO result showing identified optimization potential, based on the stated commercial assumptions. The outcome depends on the data, assumptions, optimization target, fuel prices, hire rate, vessel model and operational constraints used in the analysis. Results do not guarantee savings on future voyages.
We use data you already have
No new onboard system is required. In most cases, the information needed for EVO is already available in your voyage files and noon-reporting system.

Commercial parameters
Where a vessel model needs to be established or validated, we may additionally request two representative completed voyages sailed in a comparable loading condition. This is case-dependent, not a requirement for every EVO request.
A clear voyage-by-voyage assessment
You receive an Executed Voyage Optimization Report presenting the actual voyage alongside the simulated EVO result, with the assumptions, methodology and conclusions stated. Where appropriate, we review the findings together and recommend whether a live trial makes sense.
A fully anonymized sample report is available on request, comparing an actual voyage with the EVO simulation across route, speed, fuel, duration, cost and weather exposure.
Request the sample EVO reportA transparent analysis without hindsight bias
The executed voyage is reconstructed using available voyage data, including AIS positions, timestamps and noon reports. The EVO voyage is re-optimized at regular intervals using the forecast available at each point in time. Weather impact on achievable speed and fuel consumption is included throughout the simulation.
The comparison uses the vessel condition, commercial objective, fuel prices, cost of time, ETA requirements and operational constraints supplied for the voyage. The methodology is designed to show what could reasonably have been recommended during the voyage, rather than calculating an unrealistic perfect route after the outcome is already known.
Only available forecasts are used
The optimization does not use future weather information that would not have been known at the time.
The commercial objective is agreed in advance
The optimization target and assumptions are confirmed before the analysis.
Constraints are included
ETA requirements, charter-party terms, weather limits, waypoints and operational restrictions can be reflected in the analysis.
Actual data is the reference
The comparison is based on the vessel’s reported and observed voyage performance.
The result is explained
The final report shows the assumptions, route, speed, weather exposure and commercial calculation behind the conclusion.
Questions about EVO
What is Executed Voyage Optimization?
Executed Voyage Optimization is an analysis of an already completed voyage. Optimum Voyage recreates the voyage and re-optimizes the route and speed using the forecasts available at the time, allowing the actual and optimized results to be compared.
How much work is required from us?
Very little. In most cases, you only need to share voyage information that you already collect, such as noon reports, voyage instructions, vessel condition and commercial parameters.
Does the vessel or crew need to do anything?
No. The voyage has already been completed, so no onboard installation, live instructions or crew involvement is required.
How do you avoid hindsight bias?
The voyage is re-optimized using archived forecasts that were available at each point during the voyage. Future weather developments are not used to make earlier routing decisions.
What types of voyages can be evaluated?
EVO can be used for completed ocean voyages where sufficient voyage, vessel and commercial data is available.
Which optimization objectives can be assessed?
Depending on the voyage, EVO can assess minimum cost, fixed ETA, constant consumption, charter-party performance and other agreed commercial objectives.
What do you need from us?
We typically require the IMO number, vessel condition, drafts, departure and arrival details, noon reports, voyage instructions, fuel prices, cost of time and relevant restrictions.
Do you need AIS data?
AIS data can support reconstruction of the actual route. Where appropriate, Optimum Voyage can collect the required AIS positions, subject to data availability.
Can the vessel and company remain anonymous?
Yes. Voyage data is handled confidentially, and any example used publicly will be anonymized unless explicit permission is provided.
What do we receive?
You receive an Executed Voyage Optimization Report comparing the actual voyage with the optimized simulation across route, speed, fuel, duration, cost and weather exposure.
How long does an EVO analysis take?
Delivery time depends on the voyage and data quality. We will confirm the expected timeline after reviewing the available information.
Can EVO be used before starting a live trial?
Yes. EVO can be used to assess the potential value of Optimum Voyage using voyages that have already been completed.
Does an EVO result guarantee the same saving on future voyages?
No. Every voyage is different. EVO identifies the potential for the voyage analysed and helps demonstrate where route and speed optimization may create value.
